Honest Mistakes

Waves! Hello all, I'm Clocketpatch and I will be your reccer for the next fortnight. I have a mix of stories to share with you, though I'll admit in advance that the balance does skew towards Twelve, which is probably quite appropriate with the new series airing.

Story:
Honest Mistakes
Author: Singwithin
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 888
Author's Summary: The Doctor is on a mission, Clara is acting strange, and Buckingham Palace has entirely too many corridors.
Characters/Pairings: Clara Oswin Oswald, The Doctor (12th)
Warnings: None

Recced because:
This is a short fic but it packs in a fun bit of plot (Alien invasion! Undercover investigation!), along with some good Twelfth Doctor characterisation. I think Twelve’s character has evolved somewhat over the past few series, and this fic has his early days’ insults and face blindness down pat. I did have a brief “come on” moment, because surely Twelve was never quite as oblivious as the plot necessitates, but the epilogue and author’s note explain all, and left me grinning and wondering how Twelve will end up unraveling the mess he’s got himself and Clara into.

A Taste )

theres been a murder

nostalgia: (elementary - massive obsessive painting)
Elementary tonight was about magicians and it had a very dramatic ending. It a bit cheated in that the murderer was not the second person they spoke to, but I suppose it is allowed to go all experimental on occasion. Watson remains the best although Sherlock's GrumpyCat face is quite hilarious.

As one of those EU nationals - thank you Labour.

Not that I am hopeful overall, but it's nice nonetheless.

a sad day

such_heights: a hand cupping a candle (stock: candle)
My dad passed away in his sleep last night, at the hospice where he's been receiving extraordinary palliative care for terminal cancer and resulting paralysis since late last year. He was 59.

I visited him a few times over the weekend. We ate dinner and watched Doctor Who as a family on Saturday night, and yesterday we sat and chatted and I held his hand and told him I loved him. I knew that might be the last time I saw him. These things do provide some comfort in an awful time.

My dad was a generous, hard working, and amazingly positive person and I know he touched a lot of people's lives. I'm so proud to be his daughter. He lived his life with tremendous gusto, creative spirit and an eclectic range of hobbies and interests. I've lost a parent, a mentor, and most of all a friend. I feel very lucky to know just how much he loved me and how he proud he was of me, as exemplified in the speech he gave at my wedding, which I have on video to keep forever.

Is Capaldi more Tom-ish this season?

There's been a couple of times in episodes where he's done a sudden mad grin and I've thought "that's very Tom", and then I was scrolling through the f-list this morning and saw this:

Peter Capaldi looking like Tom Baker

and genuinely did a double take. The wicked, crinkly, mischievous TOMNESS of that is just off-the-scale as far as I am concerned.

What do you guys think?

I liked this week's episode. Again! Am now cautiously hopeful that this might be a pattern...

Am especially in love with Bill.

So, instead I offer from the BBC: The Pilot: The Fact File

And also this review which touches on a lot of the stuff I would have talked about:

Article I have been meaning to share for a while (might have shared it before, but it's worth reading twice). American, but the sentiment is universal:

Stakes is High
Money quote:
That’s what politics is — the way we distribute pain. It’s not a sport or a fraternity or a game. It’s how we determine who gets medication and who dies young, who learns in a class of twenty kids and who learns in a class of thirty, whose school has a counselor that’s trained to look for signs of sexual abuse and who doesn’t.

And, just to add a more local, current spin (i.e. the NHS):

Facebook post re. 'Virgin Care'.
